1920s Fashion Clock

1920'sfashion Is beautifully coordinated and accessorised. Outfits were a feature of 1920's ladies fashions. Hats, shoes, stockings, handbags, dresses and jewellery all came together in harmony to create a unique and elegant style that can only be appreciated when seen in real-life or in colour illustrations. The vibrancy is lost in black and white photographs. 

 Women fashion 1920sThe 1920’s was a decade in which change dominated society. Entertainment, lifestyles, and clothing were liberated and entertaining. Nightlife was revolutionized, makeup heavier, and skirts shorter. Previously, clothing was used to reflect the femininity in women, rather than individuality. The notorious battle of the sexes emerged in fashion as well because while women were fighting for equal rights to men, they were also rebelling against the pain that they had to suffer for fashion beforehand. However, due to the dramatic changes of the 1920’s, there was much controversy over the dress of women and the actions that took place (Banner). Also known as the Free Years, the Jazz age, and the Art Deco period; the 1920’s was a period in which women were often ridiculed in the public eye since the past decades have been proven less risqué (Jailer-Chamberlain).

Men fashion 1920s
The 1920s were very much an era of formalwear, as casual clothing like we think of it today would not develop for several decades. While day and evening attire was quite distinguishable, daywear would still consist of collared shirts, baggy flat-front pants or knickerbockers, blazers or other smart jackets and leather shoes. Tweed and flannel were popular fabrics for men's daywear of this era. Eveningwear denoted tail coats and top hats, while anything more casual was seen strictly as underwear (such as t-shirts) or work wear, rather than street-appropriate attire.

Shoes and Hats   Became the focus of more attention as fashion items once their visibility increased due to raised hemlines on dresses. The colour and designs of footwear and hosiery (stockings) assumed greater importance as part of co-ordinated outfits, which led designers and manufacturers to introduce new and varied colours, styles, materials, and patterns. Silk and Lisle stockings in trendy pastel shades were all the rage with women of all ages. Started off the 1920's decade with wide brims and ended up with little or none! Short hair styles meant that close fitting felt cloche hats in colours to match the colourful dress ensembles were more popular than the traditional wide brimmed style of hat (see the illustration below which shows both styles).

Millinery correspondence lessons, like those published by the Woman's Institute of Scranton, Pa were extremely popular and enabled women to save money by designing and making their own hats, or even start their own millinery business.

Beaded handbags and purses

  In stunning colours and patterns, lined with satin or silk, was all the rage during the 1920's. Beaded belts, bracelets and necklaces complemented the pretty handbags and purses. If you couldn't afford to buy the latest in beaded fashion accessories, you made your own!

1920's Jewellery

 Designs took their inspiration from, and were influenced by, popular subjects of the day, like - nature, the Orient, and ancient Egypt. Simple jewellery designs based on geometric shapes and incorporating semi-precious stones were in vogue. Platinum was the "in" metal of the 1920's. Flappers typically wore long strings of beads. Beautiful jewelled brooches and long pins were used to help hold clothes in position, while also doubling as dress ornamentation.

Hairstyles 1920s A maior progress in the transition of women's hairstyle from the traditional long-hair style of the ninteenth century- to new short hair style (BOB) 1920s were transformed into much more interesting and feminine bobs (with stylish curls and waves) in the middle to late twenties. Finger wave,Marcel wave,and shingel were the most popular haistyles of the 1920s with numerous variations of each other hairstyles like the Fton Crop were only temporary phenomenons. (Women of all ages sacrificed their long tresses on the altar of fashion.
